Snoring - Not Such A Minor IssueStatistics show that around 45% of adults snore occasionally, while around 25% snore on a regular basis. While snoring can be a mild annoyance for both the person, and the partner of the snorer, it can lead to serious frustration, sleep deprivation, and breathing complications, considered my many to be a condition requiring immediate treatment. As a general rule, snoring is more common in older men than women. People with pre-existing weight issues are also more prone to begin snoring compared to people of a healthy body condition. To some, snoring appears to be a minor annoyance, however to those suffering from this condition it's clear that snoring is a serious issue. These sufferers are often desperate for a solution, the market for snoring treatment and prevention is growing steadily, with 300 products currently in the U.S Patent registry. Some of these have evolved from the traditional idea in which a tennis ball is put inside a sock that is then sewed to the back of the pajama. The idea of this is that the tennis ball forces the snoring person to sleep on their back, which counters the findings, that snoring become worse if a person lies on his back. The theories behind these anti-snoring devices vary, all with a unique approach to the issue. Some keep the lower jaw forward, some work at keeping the nasal passage clear, and some even create an unfavorable stimulus as soon as a person snores. What Actually Causes Snoring? The annoying, deep sound you hear when a snorer is in the house is caused by vibrations from the inside of the mouth and nose. The inside part of the tongue and the upper throat bump with the uvula and palate, disrupting breathing patterns. Some people find they snore only after drinking, having a large meal or after taking certain medicines. This is due to the muscles in the tongue and throat reacting to stimulants and chemicals causing them to relax and linger into the air passageway or the throat to bunch into the airway. This can also occur when a person is unusually exhausted and falls into an extremely deep sleep. Another cause of snoring is weight. Similarly to when a person is sick and has inflamed throat muscles, an overweight person will snore as their passage ways are restricted by bulky tissue. If there are obstructions in the nasal airways, snoring may also be expected. Such makes the uptake of air more difficult and forces together the throat tissues toward the middle. With this, snoring is most rampant during cold seasons in which people are more prone to catching colds and other sinus problems. While snoring is not as serious as other medical conditions, it has to be given attention as it can lead to more serious issues. Normally, the snorer does not get enough sleep and rest because sleep patterns are disturbed. Likewise, severe snoring may lead to other long-term conditions, an example of which is called obstructive sleep apnea that includes episodes of totally blocked breathing. If your snoring is occurs heavily and frequently, the interrupted sleeping patterns will lead to sleep deprivation and the mental exhaustion that comes with not getting enough sleep.
